Some may wonder why we require such detailed information about personal finances. Simply put, while the Queer Press Grant is primarily about supporting emerging comics talent, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Prism also has to follow strict federal guidelines and provide transparency. Furthermore, we ask that you provide a simple business plan so that we can reasonably expect that your grant money will be applied to a comics project. Someone with a well thought out plan will more effectively use the resources to execute that plan. Also, the process is a good experience for applicants who will have to seek funding for their work later in their careers.

  • REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

     

    Please attach ALL the required documents. If more than one of you is applying for the grant together for a project, please supply résumés and financial documents for ALL individuals applying (combine in one file). Please make sure no file is larger than 1GB in size (if it is, please reduce the number of pages until it’s below this limit). Here’s a brief description of each document you’ll need to submit.

     

    COVER LETTER — Briefly state the project title and why the project is of interest to the readers of LGBTQ comics. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE — In addition to the Cover Letter, this statement is an opportunity to go into more depth regarding what your work offers, how it is new or different, and why the grant can help make the project better or possible. RESUMÉ — Please attach your most recent résumé/CV. BUSINESS PLAN — Please summarize your knowledge of the basic nuts and bolts of comic book self publishing including printing, distribution and marketing. List the costs of each aspect of your project, and what it would take to see it completed. FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS — Please supply proof of yearly income (or no income), this can be recent pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements. URL LINK TO CREATIVE WORK — Please supply a private URL link (via Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar) that shows as much of the completed work on your project to date as possible. This should not be a short excerpt. Include penciled or unfinished pages if necessary.

     

    Please make sure ALL of the files that you attach to the grant application are in a PDF format. You can only upload 1 attachment per item, so if a particular item has multiple pages (for example, multiple Financial Documents, or more than one résumé), please merge them together into a single, multi-page PDF file before uploading to that section. Large files are fine — just keep in mind the application may take a while to “send” when submitting.
